JUNE DONATIONS HAVE BEEN MATCHED
7/26/2016

Shooting teams that received donations or returned funds from fundraising efforts in the month of June have now received a match for those funds.  Our donation of $194,394 will benefit 98 shooting teams.  We are also excited to announce that nearly $35,000 of that donation stemmed from our SKB incentive!  Remember, teams can register to receive a FREE SKB Model 200HR to use for fundraising.  If a team returns, at least, $2,500 they will receive an additional $1,500 from the MidwayUSA Foundation.  The fundraiser can be conducted any way the team chooses and there is no deadline to conduct the fundraiser.  Some conduct raffles, others host an event and give the firearm away, or you can ask for prize underwriters.  We also encourage you to contact your local conservation group partners.  You have the freedom, we have the shotgun!  Take advantage of this program and let's grow that matching number in the coming months.  You can read the full press release about our matching donation.

GEORGIA SHOOTING TEAMS RECEIVE DONATION
7/21/2016

Our state partner in Georgia, Georgia Youth Shooting Sports Foundation, Inc. (GYSSF), has added Team Endowment funds to 24 of our youth shooting teams.  The donation of nearly $40,000 supports our mission and assists these teams in continuing the sport they enjoy.  We encourage all teams, if they haven't already, to contact a partner in their state and ask about funding opportunities.  Some state partners will match your fundraising efforts before it comes to your Team Endowment Account where it is also matched.  Visit our State Resources page.

CA TEAM: TEAM QUINCY
7/15/2016

Jeff has been on the west coast this week and met with Team Quincy in Quincy, CA.  Team Quincy has participated in several of our fundraisers and just recently applied for a grant to help their team with expenses.  One team member, Dalton Wilcox, competed in the US Open in Vegas last weekend, where he shot a 196/200...hitting 92 straight!  Pictured below is Matt Culver (President), Jeff McClure, Dalton, and Mike Wilcox.  Way to go Dalton and keep up the good work Team Quincy!

IA TEAM: OSKALOOSA SEES FUNDRAISING & COMPETITION SUCCESS
7/8/2016

Iowa is one of our most active states. There are 157 shooting teams with Team Endowment Accounts and over $5Million in endowment dollars!  On average, that's almost $34,000 dollars for each team.  Some teams, like the Oskaloosa Shooting Team (Osky), blow that average out of the water!  To date, Osky has nearly $500,000 in their account and have received over $76,000 in grant funding!  That is money for targets, uniforms, ammunition, travel expenses, and more!  This is proof that hard work and teamwork pay off...literally!  Osky has held aluminum can drives (or pop cans in the North), pancake breakfasts, as well as just asking their community for their support.  Sure, they have used some of our fundraising items at these events and we've matched EVERY dollar they contributed but none of that would be possible without their hard work and dedication to their team's future!

And, they shoot alright too!  They just recently wrapped up their regular season and took home A LOT of blue ribbons at the State shoot.  Congrats to the Oskaloosa Shooting Team on all of your accomplishments.  Your community should be proud!

MO SASP STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS
7/1/2016

I had the pleasure of attending the MO SASP State Championships this past Saturday, June 25th. The Arnold Rifle and Pistol Club hosted 17 squads, including the YSSA team from Illinois.
The Arnold Junior Shooters Pistol Team has taken a very active approach to fundraising, both on their own and with MidwayUSA Foundation  fundraising items, and consequently are able to offer new action shooting athletes an option to initially use team equipment (rather than purchasing their own) as an entry into the sport.
A huge thank you to Mike Seevers, head coach, and the members of the ARPC not only for their generous hospitality this weekend, but for giving young shooting athletes a chance to build self-confidence through the shooting sports.

-Terri; EAST Program Manager

Shooting teams in Alaska recently received a generous donation from Alaska SCTP.  A donation of $90,000, made this week, will benefit 13 shooting teams.  Shooting sports continue to grow in Alaska!  Many teams travel hours, across the state, to compete and donations like these make that travel possible.  The growth also comes from dedicated volunteers, like Neil and Lindy Moss.  Recently, Neil was awarded a citation from the Alaska Legislature for his hard work and dedication to the sport and Alaska's youth.

If you have account questions or want to hear about our fundraising items, look her up!

All of those teams are eligible to draw a grant each year to pay for team expenses, such as travel, uniforms, ammunition, targets and more.  Shooting sports continue to grow at the college level and many athletes are seeing scholarship opportunities.

YES, WE ARE CHANGING THE FUTURE OF YOUTH SHOOTING SPORTS!
4/10/2016

Other sports have “signing” ceremonies, why not the shooting sports?! Martin Methodist University’s head coach, Chad Whittenburg, recently signed a young graduate of the Michigan SCTP program from Lowell High School, Noah Roth, to his shooting team. Although a relatively new occurrence for the shotgun shooting sports, many colleges and universities are signing athletes to their competitive rosters - even offering scholarships.

High school shooting athletes have choices now when it comes to competing at the collegiate level. This was not so common, even as much as ten years ago. Larry and Brenda Potterfield, the MidwayUSA Foundation and YOU are making this a reality for young shooting athletes. Together, we are making a difference. Thank you!

WELCOME OUR FIRST GUEST BLOGGER
3/29/2016

We are getting ready to kick off our 2016 Season with our first Team practice coming up in a week. The weather here is turning to spring, and most of the Team Athletes competed at last weekend’s local club match to get back into the shooting.

We also put on our Junior Clinic last weekend. Photos attached. This is a class for new junior shooters that is instructed by our Team Coach. Our Team Athletes share their skills by providing direct peer coaching to the students. We use the clinic to educate new shooters, generate interest into the shooting sports, and identify potential new Team members. At the clinic we provide the guns & ammo, utilizing Browning Buck Marks, and Springfield XDm’s, and targets provided by MGM.

We have been working with many of our partners this pre-season who have further committed their support to the Junior Team. I just want to acknowledge and thank all our partners and specifically thank Browning who is making some things possible for us this year that previously was out of our reach.

With your partnership and support we are looking forward to another successful and exciting shooting season.

Thank you,

David Blosser, Director - Practical Edge Shooting

he MidwayUSA Foundation would like to recognize and thank the following sponsors of the Practical Edge Shooting Team for their support of the youth shooting sports: Atlanta Arms, Berry’s Bullets, Blade Tech, Browning, ESS Eye Pro, Gemini Custom Apparel, MGM Targets, Pro Ears, Springfield Armory, United States Practical Shooting Association.

OUR PARTNERS IN ACTION
3/23/2016

Our Western states Program Manager, Jeff McClure, attended the YESS4MN coaches meeting at the Caribou Gun Club in Le Sueur, MN on Sunday, March 20th. Approximately 75 coaches attended this free event and got to enjoy a 100-target fun shoot (50 trap, 50 sporting clays) as well as lunch! Cal Munkvold provided a presentation centered on the YESS4MN shoot schedule, endowment account funding and the summer sporting clays league. Following Cal’s presentation, Jeff delivered a 30 minute Foundation overview, with an emphasis on fundraising promotions. He must be a persuasive speaker because he came back with several orders for our promotional items while at the meeting!

YESS4MN will host their 2016 Spring Shoot at the South St Paul Rod & Gun Club on April 22-24th. And if your team is still looking for that one item to make your fundraiser complete – we still have Zeiss binoculars, the SKB side-by-side and the Winchester Low Wall available at no charge to your team!

PARTNERSHIPS THAT WORK
3/20/2016

The Northwest Pennsylvania Pheasants Forever chapter recently hosted a free, family BB gun clinic at the Erie Sport & Travel Expo in Erie, PA. The inflatable range, donated by Daisy Outdoor Products, had 618 youngsters pass through it in three days! On hand to assist the PF volunteers were coaches and athletes from the Corry High School Clay Crushers and the Warren High School Blue Team. Not only does this kind of partnership benefit conservation chapters and youth shooting teams ($1000 in raffle tickets were sold for a Winchester Model 70!), but the end result of a weekend like this is that there are 618 more youths (and parents) that have learned the principles of safe gun handling and had fun doing it – if those smiles are any indication!

STATE PARTNERS ARE MULTIPLIERS
3/7/2016

Pennsylvania youth shooting teams are lucky to have two MidwayUSA Foundation partners – the Pennsylvania Youth Shooting Association (PYSA - http://www.pysa.us/funding.html) in western PA and the Palmyra Sportsmens Association (PSA - http://www.palmyrasportsmens.com/HTML/index.shtml) in the eastern part of the state. Pennsylvania teams that send fundraising proceeds to these partners can receive extra matching dollars for their efforts. PYSA and PSA will then send the team’s original donation plus their matching dollars to us - as always, the MidwayUSA Foundation matches the team’s original donation once it arrives here.

Both PYSA and PSA have matching money programs in place, but have different parameters for support. For more information, visit the websites above or contact them via email.

OKLAHOMA STATE UNIVERSITY PRACTICAL PISTOL TEAM'S BRILLIANT IDEA
3/2/2016

It’s exciting when our Program Managers get back in the office after meeting with teams on the road! Is it because the office is too quiet without them? Eh, maybe. But more likely it’s because they come back with new, outside-the-box ideas from our teams that we can’t wait to share. For example:

Jeff took a tour through Texas and Oklahoma last week, at one point sitting down with the Oklahoma State University Practical Pistol Team. Nathan, Chris, and Ben have come up with the idea to put a “QR” code on the team’s business card, linking donors directly to the team endowment page! …Brilliant!

ACUI LOWER EAST COAST COLLEGIATE CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIPS
2/27/2016

Terri was recently in Savannah, GA attending the ACUI Lower East Coast Collegiate Conference Championships. According to Russ Arnold, Shooting Sports Consultant for the ACUI, this was the largest Conference Championship to date. 190 athletes, representing 29 high school and college clay target teams, converged at the Forest City Gun Club.

As team endowment accounts grow, we’re seeing an associated increase in attendance at many competitions. Grant funding from your endowment account can be used to off-set travel expenses, registration fees, ammunition costs, etc. One way to grow your account is to conduct fundraisers and collect matching money for your team’s efforts.

The ACUI is joining several other MidwayUSA Foundation partners in offering matching money for fundraising proceeds. At the 2016 ACUI National Collegiate Championship, teams “signing up for a fundraiser on site for the Spring semester will receive $1250 with the opportunity for a total of $2500. The additional $1250 will be sent once a deposit is confirmed to be made at MidwayUSA Foundation from the fundraiser.” For more information about this opportunity, please contact Russ Arnold at rga@ss-consulting.org

OKLAHOMA DEPARTMENT OF WILDLIFE CONSERVATION MAKES A GENEROUS DONATION

The Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation is a great partner in our quest to sustain youth shooting sports. Visit our state resources page to find a partner in your state.

MICHIGAN SCTP HEAD COACHES MEETING 2016
2/23/2016

Another shotgun shooting season is about to kick off and many states are holding their head coaches meetings. Terri attended Michigan’s this past weekend (and by the way, was happy to find no snow on the ground!), providing MidwayUSA Foundation updates about promotional items, matching money, and other endowment information. 25 teams were represented - two of them brand new! If you’d like Jeff or Terri to attend your state coach meeting, please contact us at: jhmcclure@midwayusafoundation.org  or tdewitt@midwayusafoundation.org

A sincere thank you to all volunteers – parents and coaches – who continue to give their time, money, and commitment to make the youth shooting sports an ever-increasing presence in communities across the country. It’s truly a team effort and without you, our mission could not succeed!

MASON DIXON CLAYBUSTERS HAS AMAZING FUNDRAISING RESULT
2/18/2016

Take a page from the playbook of some Pennsylvania teams: the Palmyra Sportsmen’s Association offered table space to teams wishing to sell tickets for their fundraisers at this year’s NRA Great American Outdoor Show in Harrisburg, PA. The Mason-Dixon Claybusters sold 120 tickets in one weekend and will add $3000 to their endowment account as a result.

What outdoor, hunting or fishing events are scheduled for your area? How about conservation group banquets, like local Pheasants Forever or National Wild Turkey Federation chapters? Events like these can be win-win for everyone involved. Reach out to your community – you never know what fundraising opportunities might be waiting for your team!

US ARMY JR AIR RIFLE CHAMPIONSHIPS

Browning made a donation at the 2016 SHOT Show to again prove their commitment to supporting youth shooting sports.  The donation of $17,597 will benefit shooting teams in our Team Endowment Account Program.  Randy Moeller, Executive Director, talked about the donation.  “We thank Browning for their commitment and contributions to youth shooting sports. Whether it is with cash or top quality products designed for youth, they continue to show support.  By providing young shooters with equipment they can comfortably use, like the Micro and Midas Micro versions of their popular shotguns and rifles, they are allowing our youth to get involved and stay involved in the sport."  Browning is a great partner that is helping us continue to offer opportunities to young shooters and change the future of youth shooting sports.

SUCCESSFUL 2015
1/20/2016

As we dive into 2016, we can't forget about the successful year we had in 2015.  Yet again, our shooting teams, coaches, partners, donors, volunteers and others made it another one for the record books.  Over 3,000 youth shooting teams now have endowment accounts with us.  Our endowment total is around $79 million...yes, $79 million!  On average, our shooting teams have a balance of $31,000.  That is a grant payout of over $1,500 that teams can use for ammunition, targets, travel and more.  And speaking of grants, we broke those records too!  We paid out $2,578,421 to 861 shooting teams in 2015!  This is allowing more of our youth to pull triggers, attend more events and gain the opportunities that being part of a team offers.

In 2016 we'll matched every donation, dollar for dollar, the entire year!  We encourage teams to ask their supporters to become recurring donors and take part in our promotions.  Remember, items offered through our promotional program are FREE.  You register, we'll send you the item and you conduct the fundraiser.  From there, the funds returned to your account are matched, dollar for dollar.  If you make more than is required you can send that back for a match or keep it to use for instant operating cash.  Right now, we have unique firearms and binoculars.  Visit our promo page to learn more.  Thanks for making 2015 a great year and helping us change the future of youth shooting sports!

THANK YOU LARRY & BRENDA POTTERFIELD FOR YOUR COMMITMENT TO YOUTH SHOOTING SPORTS
1/15/2016

Potterfields on the Range-Sparta 2015 The industry of youth shooting sports is seeing tremendous growth and there is no denying that growth could not be accomplished without substantial support from Larry and Brenda Potterfield, owners of MidwayUSA.  Their donations to the MidwayUSA Foundation have allowed nearly 100,000 shooting sport athletes opportunities they would not have otherwise received.

In 2015, their donations to the MidwayUSA Foundation totaled nearly $7 million.  A majority of that donation was used for programs like the matching program offered by the MidwayUSA Foundation.  With this program, which will continue in 2016, donors have the ability to choose the shooting team that will benefit from their donation and that donation is matched, dollar for dollar.  The Potterfield contribution also covered all of the MidwayUSA Foundation operational expenses.  This support allows 100% of each donation that comes into the [MidwayUSA] Foundation to go to the shooting team of a donor’s choice.   None of the funds teams place with the Foundation are reduced to cover operational overhead.

Randy Moeller, Executive Director of the MidwayUSA Foundation talked about the generosity of the Potterfield family.  “The charitable contributions made by Larry and Brenda Potterfield to the MidwayUSA Foundation are a result of their shared passion for the current and future growth of the youth shooting sports. Their gifts allow the MidwayUSA Foundation to provide long-term fundraising support for youth teams across all shooting disciplines, in all 50 states.   We are very grateful for the vision, support and funding provided by Larry and Brenda Potterfield. Together we are indeed changing the future of youth shooting sports.”

It was 100% conceived & created by Browning in the frontier pioneer town of Ogden, Utah in 1878. Not only was it the first he produced, but it was the gun that started his relationship with the Winchester Repeating Arms Company.

By participating in the Winchester Model 1885 promotion, teams commit to sending $1,500 back to their endowment account, which will be matched dollar for dollar!  We believe our shooting teams can raise twice as much with this gun and that is instant operating cash to use for current expenses.  To register, complete the Letter of Intent found in the Winchester Model 1885 registration packet.  Your gun should be shipped around December.  Email Promotions with questions:  promo@midwayusafoundation.org.

YTF CONTINUES TO SUPPORT YOUTH SHOOTING SPORTS
10/7/2015

Our Texas partner, The Youth Target Foundation (YTF), continues to be committed to youth shooting sports and recently donated nearly $60,000 to 6 youth shooting teams.  An active partner in Texas, they see the importance of sustainable funding.  Shellee Enfinger, YTF's CEO offered her thoughts.

The YTF youth shooting teams are committed to the future of the sport. In 2015-2016, the teams participating in YTF have committed to fundraising $2,500 a year for their own teams future. Through the generous donations by Larry and Brenda Potterfield, the teams fundraising dollars are matched 1:1. Our teams are seeing the influence they can have on their immediate needs and future benefits. YTF teams will be able to increase their perpetual team grants by thousands through this commitment of fundraising $2,500 a year. This is one of the ways they can guarantee the stability and security of their YTF youth shooting team for years to come. "Our youth can be proud of their leadership and legacy they are leaving behind when they move on from their high school clay target team. They are truly building the future. It really is something to be proud of, " said President Jeanie Almond, AKA Mama Jeanie.

The YTF is looking to expand this matching program available to our teams, this gives donors an opportunity to match the funds raised by local, regional or state teams. For more information on how to donate, match funds, start a team, participate in YTF or for YTF to assist you in stabilizing your existing team, visit www.youthtargetfoundation.org or call 972-900-4459.

CMP TALLADEGA MARKSMANSHIP PARK
6/10/2015

On June 5th I had the opportunity to attend the dedication of the CMP Talladega Marksmanship Park.  The brand new 500 acre facility, located near the Talladega 500 race track, has the most modern and technologically advanced rifle and pistol ranges in the country. There are also action pistol bays and shotgun ranges including trap, 5-stand, and sporting clays.  According to Judy Legerski, Chairman and CEO, the park was finished on time and within the $20 million budget.
The CMP folks were kind enough to loan me a golf cart on Thursday afternoon, the day before the dedication, so I could take my time on a self-tour.  Overall I am highly impressed and applaud the CMP folks for doing it right.  It is a credit to the shooting sports to have such an amazing facility that is as beautiful as it is functional.  Another key aspect is safety and the well trained CMP staff, along with the open firing line layout and electronic targets, make the rifle and pistol ranges about as safe as possible.  What a great place to introduce and train youth in the shooting sports.

To all of the CMP staff I extent my congratulations on a job well done.  The next time I visit the park I think I’ll drive and take a few guns along so I can really take advantage of the facility.  Who knows, I might just have so much fun that I won’t leave.

Jeff, our west region Program Manager, recently visited shooting teams in Texas and Oklahoma. Some of the active Texas teams included Stephen F Austin State University, Simms High School, Atlanta High School, and Queen City High School.  Some of these teams invited new teams in their area to join the conversation and by the end we had three new teams with Team Endowment Accounts AND some got registered for the Winchester Model 70 Super Grade to start growing their account immediately!  Combined, teams Jeff met with have nearly $70,000 in endowment funds and have received over $6,000 in funding from us.  If you’d like Jeff or Terri to visit with your team, contact us.  And, we’d love for you to invite new shooting teams near you that might not have an endowment account or have an account and want to learn more about how our promotions and programs work.

Main Line Youth Trap Shooting Club
1/12/2015

It's always nice to see one of our teams in the news.  Some articles talk about recent competitions, others might talk about events the teams have hosted and others, like this one, talk about how shooting sports can offer opportunities for ALL youth and probably teach them some life lessons along the way.

"So these kids have to have fortitude and stick-to-itiveness.  It's a lot like life and we talk to them about these messages." -Fran Jacobs, founder Main Line Youth Trap Shooting Club

A Message from Walla Walla Gun Club
1/9/2015

Alot of good things have happened to WWGC since our Youth Trap and Skeet Team came on the scene a year ago September. For one thing, we have quite a few active, involved, and very nice young men and women enjoying our Club and showing some of us old guys how it’s done. By far the greatest advantage to our Youth Shooting Team is the financing available to us from MidwayUSA Foundation. Here is what the MidwayUSA Foundation has done for our Club and our Youth Shooting Team in the 18 months since we started back in June 2013.  Just for starting our team, we received a donation to our MidwayUSA Foundation trust account of $5,000.00.  That was matched, making our account balance $10,000.00.

Along with the cash donations, MidwayUSA Foundation furnished our Club, at absolutely no charge, all the great stuff we have been able to raffle off. This includes a Model 70 Winchester Super Grade in .270 Winchester, known as the “Jack O’Connor Rifle,” a Browning Silver Sporting 12 gauge semi-auto with all the bells and whistles, an Apple iPad, two SKB RS-300 semi-auto 12 gauge sporting clays shotguns, a pair of Zeiss 10x40 binoculars, two Model 70 Winchester Super Grade rifles in .280 Remington caliber (coming this spring), and about 500 Browning hunting knives with sheaths to use as enticement material  for our heavy raffle ticket buyers. As I said earlier, we received or will receive these items absolutely free. We made approximately $5,000.00 on our Browning Silver Sporting raffle last spring. We sent $2,500.00 to our endowment account. They matched the contribution, thus adding $5,000.00. Our team kept 50% for use in buying ammo and targets.  The team actually purchased a whole pallet of targets.

Each one of the SCTP tournaments we attended garnered even more funds into our MidwayUSA Foundation account. We received $4,000.00 just for attending the Washington State Shoot, and more when the team won the JV State Championship. So our team ended the summer shooting season with over $32,000 in our endowment account. Not bad for the first year’s effort. Thanks to additional promotions and the matching program, our account  has grown to $111,325.00! Last year, our account balance was just over $10,000.00, which meant that when our grant check arrived in January we put $500.00 into our team’s checking account. In January 2015, our team will receive a grant check for $5,550.00, a ten-fold plus increase in just one short year. That means that we will be able to attend even more tournaments this year, even farther away, and garner even more money for our account. Not to mention tournament experience and hopefully a lot of blue ribbons and gold medals for our team’s athletes.

It’s not hard to look ahead to the near future and see where the growth in our MidwayUSA Foundation trust account will lead us.  This is a perpetual fund, in that it goes on forever and ever—growing and sending us cash. In no time at all, it will change the outlook of our Club’s funding not just for now, but for all of time.  That’s considerable.

Murray State Racers
8/21/2014

Murray StateMurray State RifleSchool is just a week in and the Murray State Racers are already on the firing line.  Terri joined Coach Lollar at the range for practice at 0530 this morning and by 0800, these shooting athletes were stowing their gear, grabbing their books and heading to class.  Another NCAA Rifle season is underway... Good luck in competitions this year, you have already locked down the largest Team Endowment Account balance in our program!   We encourage all you other teams to try and catch them!

Fox Fire Fishfry
8/20/2014

The Hamilton County Jr/Sr High School Fox Fire recently held their annual fundraiser, a fish fry, and 800 people came out to support the team.  We're not sure how many pounds of fish they fried but they did raise approximately $30,000! The team has 51 kids and 16 coaches.  Every kid pays $100 to join the team and each are expected to sell $300 in raffle tickets for the fundraiser.  After that, the team takes care of the rest, including, practice fees, entry fees, etc.

A & M Clayshooters: Tuba City, AZ
8/19/2014

Jeff recently made a stop in Tuba City, Arizona and met with the A & M Clayshooters and has had many, many great things to say about his visit....AMAZING is an adjective he used. They are the only Native American team shotgun team in the United States.  The team started with just 5 kids and now it is up to 30! The coaches, Art & Michelle drive 4 hours, EACH WAY, from their home in Phoenix to attend practice...and that's just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the sacrifices they've made for the team.  We hope to hear more from them, stay tuned!

Jeff Takes on New Mexico & Arizona
8/18/2014

Jeff is visiting teams in the New Mexico and Arizona and the updates keep on comin'!  We talk to a lot of teams, daily, but getting to see their range in person and meeting the shooters, coaches, parents and volunteers that make these teams possible is really what it's all about!  Last Thursday he met with with Manzano High School NJROTC, La Cueva HS MCJROTC, and Eldorado High School...all in Albuquerque.  By Friday he was meeting another four teams, including, Farmington, Aztec, Kirtland, Bloomfield and Piedra Vista.  According to Jeff, Piedra Vista is one of our most active fundraising partners!  Combined, these teams have nearly $200,000 in endowment funds.

Jeff also added this, which might be quite helpful for a lot of other teams.

'A big challenge for the school teams in Albuquerque is a prohibition against schools being involved in ANY type of fundraising (drawing, raffles, etc.) the teams were excited to hear about opportunities to partner with local gun clubs, conservation groups and civic organizations.  The coaches are also officers in the local American Legion Chapter and plan to run fundraisers through that chapter.

Terri in Illinois: Part Two
7/25/2014

...and driving north from Sparta, IL I find myself surrounded by corn and beans and small towns reminiscent of a Norman Rockwell print...wait, where am I?  This is Illinois?!  I must have taken a wrong turn at Albuquerque...recalculating...

But the GPS is correct and I get to see more of this bucolic Midwest state as I stop along the way to visit with coaches from the Tri-County Clay Grinders, the Lincoln Sportsman's Club SCTP team, Central Illinois Precision Shooters, the Young Guns of Illinois and the Edgewood Scholastic Trap Team.

I'm impressed by the dedication these coaches have to 'their kids.'  Illinois is one of those states where shooting teams face unique challenges and the shooting sports are constantly under barrage from a political machine that would love nothing more than to see them go away.  Yet not only do these teams exist, they are growing in number due to the persistent efforts and passionate commitment of individuals like those I met with last week. Thank you for what you do, you are changing the future!
-Terri

Terri in Illinois: Sparta
7/25/2014

I was so excited to be able to visit Sparta again this year, and thrilled that I actually needed a light jacket for some of my time there!  I wish I could've visited with every one of our teams, but it was enough to just soak up the energy that permeates the SCTP/SPP Nationals.   I know that not all the athletes perform as well as they'd like and may leave Sparta wanting more for next year but as a spectator, I'm so very proud of all the teams who compete and so very grateful to all of the staff, parents, coaches and volunteers who make this event happen. Thank you all! -Terri

Our Day in Sparta!
7/24/2014

Last week we traveled with the Potterfields to Sparta, IL for the SCTP and SPP national competitions.  Around 2,500 athletes gathered on the 2,200 acre facility to compete and they couldn't have had any better weather to do it.  Part of the day involved a presentation to honor Larry and Brenda as the 'Founding Life Diamond Members' of the Champions Roundtable; a new initiative to recognizes donors who have made major contributions to SSSF's mission.  After accepting the honor, Larry addressed the room of approximately 80 coaches.  "Brenda and I are lucky enough to give away half of our income every year, but without all of you out there teaching those kids safety, spending hours at practice, and using your personal vacation time to travel to competitions, it would just be a stack of money, so THANK YOU for all you do."  SSSF's Dan Hathaway presented each of them with a custom, Shamrock Leathers shell bag too.  Read more.

MichiganEleven members of the St. Joe County Straight Shooters competed in the Michigan State SCTP and AIM Trapshooting State Competition and placed 2nd!  The competition was held in Mason, Michigan at the Michigan Trapshooting Association.  Team member, Matt Davis, won the SCTP High Gun award with a score of 197/200.  Congrats Mike!  The Straight Shooters received a donation from Michigan SCTP following their performance and have received grants from us (MidwayUSA Foundation) and the NRA Foundation to assist with the purchase of team jerseys and competition costs.  Keep up the good work, Straight Shooters!

Zeiss Binos On the Way!
7/9/2014

For all those lucky participating teams that registered quick enough for the Zeiss Terra 10x42 binoculars, they are on their way!  UPS picked them up yesterday and we are already receiving confirmation they have arrived at certain destinations.  We can't wait to see how much money teams can add to their Team Endowment Account with this promotion.  Here's a picture of Jeff's hard work to prove it.

Thank you Nebraska!
6/26/2014

Jeff made several stops in Nebraska, including a few in Omaha to meet with Creighton Prep, Marian High School, Elkhorn Trap and Blair Youth Shooting.  Blair is a brand new team with us and we can't wait to see how quickly their account grows.  And speaking of growing accounts...Creighton Prep has taken full advantage of our Foundation promotions and with some additional donations, fundraisers and hard work, they have grown their account to nearly $200,000!

Just south of Omaha was Papillion-La Vista and then he headed West, visiting the teams listed in our previous blog posts, along with the Calamus Dusters and Karp & Krow 4-H, who hope to register for a promotion very soon to raise money for their team!

"Going out on the road, talking with teams and seeing how passionate they are about their shooting team is exciting," explained Jeff.  "I have also seen a lot of these teams start with a balance of zero and grow their endowment very quickly...it can be done!"

Thanks for the hospitality, Nebraska.  Keep up the good work!

Jeff's Nebraska Trip: Grand Island Central Catholic
6/25/2014

After a few team visits, including one with Norris Trap and Creighton Preparatory, Jeff continued on to Grand Island for a tour of the Heartland Park...and what a park it is!  The park supports all shooting disciplines, including skeet and trap fields, a sporting clay course, pistol and rifle ranges, a cowboy action range and even a fully stocked lake for fishing.  A small handful of local teams use the park and this year, Heartland Park will host the National 4-H Shoot and welcome approximately 500 athletes from 36 states.  Thanks Tim O'Connor for the grand tour, we're so glad the youth in Central Nebraska and beyond have the option to use this facility!

Norris Trap Team
6/19/2014

Jeff is in Nebraska this week and one of his stops was in Firth, home of the Norris Trap Team.  Norris is composed of 84 shooters; including elementary, middle and high school. At one time, Norris was the only program in the United States with a range facility on campus.  Thanks to Keith Brunkow and others for showing Jeff around!

West Seattle Totems
5/16/2014

We love hearing from out teams! This week, Joe from the West Seattle Totems, sent a note about how proud he is of his team members and their families.  In fact, his exact words were, "This is perhaps the nicest group of kids and families I have ever worked with."   We have no doubt, Joe!  He added some of the accomplishments of his rifle team too.

-Up for 6 NRA National Team Records (5 in smallbore & 1 in 3P Air Rifle)

-Won the American Legion Team Match

-Won both the indoor and outdoor team championships in the Washington State Junior Smallbore Championships AND out of the ten individual championships available...a Totem won every one!

Wow!  Congrats and keep up the good work!

Groton Sportsman's Clay Grinders
5/10/2014

Thanks Bob for a great note & pictures!

Terri,
It was great meeting you and getting a chance to take some pictures of the athletes from the colleges in the North East at the Clay Cup. I had a really nice time and am always so impressed to see so many shotgunners from such diverse colleges.
I would like to thank you all at the Foundation and especially the Potterfields for their support.
Two young ladies from our team have signed up to speak at our local upcoming Friends of the NRA banquet. They will be the hit of the night, I am sure. I don’t know if you could find a more receptive audience. Both these young ladies are student athletes in the true sense and are a great representation of our sport.

Youth Target Foundation Regionals: North
5/8/2014

In Texas, shooting sports is growing faster than the facilities can handle and that is due, in large part, to the efforts of the Youth Target Foundation (YTF).  Jeff headed to Fort Worth for a YTF event last weekend and saw that first hand. Battling prom and the ACT test, the shoot was still sold out, hosting 242 participants.  Winning teams were offered endowment funds too!  First place was Marcus High School, receiving $3,000, North Texas took second and $2,000, and third place and $1,000 went to Allen High School.

Youth Target Foundation

Olympic shooter and YTF Youth Director, Sean McLelland, offered an extra event that was both fun and challenging for the shooters.  The long bird game consisted of 5 true pair, a 16 yard trap target and a 60yd vertical team.  The athletes lined up, 190 to be exact, to take part and six shot perfect scores!  Like the organization itself, the event was a huge success...no doubt YTF is making big things happen for our youth!

Old Fort Rimfire Challenge!
5/2/2014

Many thanks to the Old Fort Gun Club, Bill Striplin, and all the volunteers who make a successful match happen! The 2014 NSSF Rimfire Challenge at the Old Fort Gun Club in Fort Smith, AR, April 26-27th, had over 100 competitors from 10 different states – some from as far away as far away as California, Iowa, and Illinois. While this match wasn’t specifically a youth competition, what made this local event unique for the MidwayUSA Foundation was the generous inclusion of a side match intended to raise money for the endowment account of one lucky Arkansas youth shooting team. This is the kind of support we’d love to see throughout our industry and we’d like to sincerely thank Bill Striplin and the Old Fort Gun Club for their thoughtfulness. You guys are setting the standard! -Terri

USAYESS: Minnesota
4/29/2014

This past weekend Jeff headed to Minnesota for a USA Youth Education in Shooting Sports (USAYESS) event.  It was the first USAYESS event in Minnesota and to say it was successful would be an understatement.  USAYESS is a new non-profit organization helping to offer more opportunities to our youth through shooting sports.  In fact, their exact mission is 'a non profit premier athletic association which introduces, grows, supports, and educates youth and coaches to the shooting sports and wildlife conservation.'
To accomplish this mission, USAYESS hosts 'Youth Outdoor Experience' events, like the one in Minnesota. Youth that attend receive hands on experience in skeet, trap, archery, bb gun, rimfire, wildlife conservation and much more. This past weekend, approximately 500 people attended and 80% had never shot sporting clays or skeet. But after this weekend, 300 youth have now experienced a trap and sporting clays event!  And it gets better...the event generated 29 new Team Endowment Accounts!  Thanks USAYESS for introducing so many young folks to our great sport!  Here's too continuing this great partnership!

Successful day of breaking clays

Terri's ChowderPalooza Wrap-Up
4/18/2014

My tour of the Northeast culminated in a competition-packed Saturday; I started the morning at the Sig Sauer Academy in Exeter, NH and ended the day at Minuteman Sportsman’s Club in Burlington, MA. Sig Sauer was hosting the Scholastic Pistol Program’s Northeast Regional, which turned out a record number of teams and competitors. (I can’t be sure, but cabin fever may have had something to do with that, since the day was absolutely gorgeous! There’s still snow on the ground up there, by the way) Congratulations to all the teams that competed, as well as to West Point Black (USMA), Holyoke Steel Shooters and Crew 401 for their respective wins!
Northeastern University

A short 90 minute drive later and I was at the Minuteman Sportsman’s Club watching collegiate shotgun teams contest this year’s right to carry home the Clay Cup! In a stunning upset J, the West Point shotgun team emerged as this year’s victor, sending Yale home empty- handed for the first time in four years. Regardless of outcome, all the collegiate teams enjoyed a warm, sunny day of competition – including newcomers Sterling College and the University of Maine.

Sunday found me on the smallbore range watching the Mass Rifle Rebels practice in the prone and kneeling positions. Coach Maureen Trickett patiently educated this shotgun shooter about “follow-through” (really? in rifle?!), consistency in position and strategies with the wind. It was very enlightening, but the only thing I could think of was that if I could ever manage to get myself into the kneeling position, it would probably take the entire team to help me get out of it…

Many thanks to the generous hospitality of all the teams I visited on the ChowderPalooza tour! This one’s in the books, but I’m already looking forward to the next one for more wonderful company and fabulous seafood!

Terri's ChowderPalooza: Day 4
4/12/2014

My visit to Manchester, NH started by meeting with the Daniel Webster BSA Council execs followed by breakfast (pulled pork omelet! - if you hadn’t guessed yet, this is a very food-centric travel itinerary!)

The Daniel Webster BSA Council, seeing the success that the Pine Tree Council (Maine) has had with the Scholastic Pistol Program, is interested in exploring this activity for its scouting units in New Hampshire. Scott Moore, director of the SPP, was on hand to explain how to get an SPP team started, what support is available from SPP sponsors, the SPP course of fire, etc. Once a team has been established, I explained how the MidwayUSA Foundation endowment program works to sustain that team. It’s our hope that BSA Councils across the U.S. will begin creating SPP teams – that’s a lot of kids pulling triggers!

My day ended with a visit to the Pioneer Sportsman’s Club in Dunbarton, NH. This is the home range for the Newport News Naval Sea Cadets and Crew 556 SPP teams. The athletes (properly supervised by range safety officers) conducted training while their coaches and parents had a chance to pick my brain (a challenging task) about the endowment program and our fundraising opportunities. These folks have a very good grasp of our program and its significance for the future of their respective teams.

Thank you to the teams for their time and for the really cool Velcro patch for my hat! -Terri

Terri's ChowderPalooza: Day 3
4/11/2014

Had lunch with Chuck Barney today, coach of the Harvard Pistol Team. Yes, Harvard has a pistol team! Hard to believe an Ivy League institution like this would allow such a club sport to exist. Yet it does - in no small part to the efforts of a coach like Chuck.  Do you see a theme running through these reports? All of the folks I’m meeting with this week are dedicated to “their kids” and give freely of their personal time and money to see their respective programs survive. Chuck had 85 student responses to the invitational email that went out from the club sports program earlier this year. On average, he has 10 kids that make the 60 mile round trip each week to practice. These kids have to rent vehicles to get from school to the Harvard Sportsmens Club to practice. When they get there, they have one gun amongst them to practice with. This one gun is all they have to compete with when they head up to the Sig Sauer Academy on Saturday for the SPP Regional event.  If this one gun happens to break down, they will hope to borrow a pistol from someone at the match in order to finish. Chuck relates all this to me very matter-of-factly. It’s simply their version of “normal," something Chuck is working very hard to change.

NEW 'Youth On Target' Newsletter
4/11/2014

Check out our latest newsletter to hear about what we and our teams have been up to.  We attended Pheasant Fest, moved into a new office and heard a great story from Xavier Charter Schools in Idaho...just to name a few.  Dick, our Executive Director, has some important things to address too.  As always, send us stories about your teams and fundraisers! Enjoy!

Terri's ChowderPalooza: Day 2
4/10/2014

In keeping with the historical theme of this trip, the Holyoke Revolver Club is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year. This afternoon, I had the pleasure of chatting with Marshall Johnson, coach of the Holyoke Revolver Club Steel Shooters.
Yesterday I mentioned the primary challenges that youth shooting teams face – available facilities and coaching staff; of these, available facilities presents the most pressing challenge for the Holyoke Steel Shooters. They have an indoor range, used concurrently by local law enforcement, which Marshall can configure in winter months to represent a scaled version of an SPP stage so the team can continue to train when there’s snow on the ground. This kind of ingenuity is not unusual for teams with limited resources.  Marshall’s hope is to find a facility that is willing to host a junior state steel championship in Massachusetts. His club is too small to set up all SPP stages across the firing lanes, but driving distances in the New England area are such that you can cross three state lines and back again in two hour’s drive time (ok, depending on traffic conditions…), making it easier for out-of-state teams to participate in more events. Marshall knows if he can find a host venue, “they will come.”

Terri's ChowderPalooza: Day 1
4/9/2014

This week I have the pleasure of meeting with several of the dedicated coaches and parents of our teams in the New England area. Monday morning starts with a Diners, Drive-ins and Dives-worthy breakfast at a local diner in East Lyme, CT with Tom Migdalski, coach of the Yale Skeet and Trap Team. We chatted over home fries and hot coffee, then headed out to see Yale’s range facility. It would be hard to overstate the historical significance of this facility. The legacy of New England’s (and America’s) oldest collegiate shooting team is visible everywhere you look: weathered and lichened stone borders around the grounds; a beautifully refurbished cow barn now serving as the team club house; a hay loft restored and retro-fitted with windows to give the team a meeting area. Adjacent to this building is a similarly refurbished silo, brilliantly repurposed as the team’s gun cleaning station (my picture doesn’t do it justice).

Lunch-time finds me in another location with its own historical significance (maybe that’s just what you should expect in an area that was part of the original thirteen colonies?!) – the U.S. Coast Guard Academy. After hot chow in the cadet dining hall, CWO3 Barber, Coach Hawkins and GM1Ware gave me a tour of the USCGA offices, indoor range and arms room facility (see pictures). It’s amazing to me what determination and ingenuity can accomplish – this basement indoor range (8 firing points) is equipped to safely accommodate a variety of training requirements: air gun, smallbore and combat arms.

Steve Rocketto, the Montville High School Rifle Coach, is a textbook example of many of the coaches I meet – donating freely of personal time and money, passionate about teaching his athletes the life skills inherent in the shooting sports and concerned about finding his eventual replacement so that the program will continue to thrive. Besides ammunition, facilities and coaching staff are the biggest limiting factors for youth shooting teams. Nearby Quaker Hill Rod & Gun Club has been especially supportive of local junior shooting programs and Steve is grateful for their continued support. He’s hoping that a member of the local community and/or Quaker Hill R & G Club will volunteer to take over the coaching duties when he retires. And so are we…

GA: The Roosevelt Games
3/26/2014

In our latest blog post I spoke about the Georgia Youth Shooting Sports Foundation (GYSSF) and Ret CMSgt Roy McClain; the GYSSF president. Well, Roy is back at it again...doing great things for shooting sports.  He will head up the shooting competition for The Roosevelt Games; an Olympic style sports competition for veterans and active duty service members with physical disabilities.  While most of the games will be held in Warm Springs, GA, the shooting competition will be held at the Ole Mill Range in Griffin, GA, the range Roy McClain manages. The range was chosen by BlazeSports America for its overall facility, equipment and staff expertise.  You can read more here.  We're honored to work alongside people like Roy & GYSSF.

GYSSF Donates over $30,000 to 21 Shooting Teams
3/17/2014

GYSSF

The Georgia Youth Shooting Sports Foundation recently donated approximately $33,000 to more than 20 teams that have an active Team Endowment Account with us.  Roy McClain said, "We are excited to provide assistance to these teams and expand the scope of the youth shootings sports throughout Georgia."  You can read the full press release here.

“We don’t just want to compete as a team, we want to give back as a team.”
3/11/2014

Often, we're discussing ways teams can raise money for to support their own efforts but the truth is that there are some amazing individuals in the shooting sports industry and most understand that giving is a two way street.  They see the full meaning of philanthropy and giving back.  The Tech Trap & Skeet Team in Texas is a great example.

The Browning Incentive
3/5/2014

Our latest opportunity for teams is The Browning Incentive.  This is available to ALL teams taking part in our Browning Silver Sporting Promotion.  Each year, Browning makes a substantial donation to benefit youth shooting sports, so we think that money should go to the teams working to raise their own funds with a Browning product(s).  We also think this is a way to reward creativity.  Teams are allowed to conduct our promotions any way they choose, it doesn't have to be a raffle.  In fact, a lot of our states cannot conduct raffles because of state laws so they'd love to hear new ideas!  The Browning Incentive is simple.  Your team raises the most money with the Browning Silver Sporting promotion and you win! We'll reward the top three teams.  Find ways to sweeten the pot, sell more tickets, get your community and local businesses involved and let us know how you did it!  Good luck, we can't wait to see how our teams are raising money.

Tennessee Groups Host Huge Youth Waterfowl Hunt
3/4/2014

Blog submitted by John Devney; Delta Waterfowl Foundation
Written by Tyler Shoberg

Back in February, 125 kids spread across 15 west Tennessee farms in blinds donated by local hunters. After a reprieve from hunting pressure, flock after flock of decoying ducks — mostly mallards, wigeon and pintails — provided opportunities to the young guns. “It’s an experience that opens up a whole new world for these kids, and it’s something they’re going to remember for the rest of their lives,” Jay Sheridan said. “It’s a kind of fellowship that people who don’t duck hunt would never know about.”

Many of the hunt applicants are involved in the Tennessee Scholastic Clay Targets Program, which provides kids in grades 5 to 12 the opportunity to learn about shotguns and shooting sports such as skeet, trap and sporting clays. While the program is wildly successful, most of the shooters don’t hunt. The annual youth waterfowl hunt might help change that.  “It’s a very diverse group of kids, including a lot of females. What we’re trying to do is take these athletes who are competing with a shotgun and introduce them to waterfowling,” said Jay Sheridan of the TWF. “Through introducing these kids to the wonders of nature and the bounty of our natural resources, we’ve planted a seed that, hopefully, turns them into lifelong hunters and conservationists.”

Support = Profit
3/1/2014

For those of you familiar with our promotions you know that they not only add some serious cash to your Team Endowment Account but they can also offer your team the opportunity of instant operating cash.  We think those two things are pretty valuable but perhaps the most valuable is the community support our teams gain.  Though we do allow you to conduct the promotion any way you choose, many teams conduct a raffle.  Team members, parents, coaches and others knock on doors to sell raffle tickets for their shooting team.  You can't put a price on educating your community about your team and your passion for shooting sports.

4. What percentage of your donation goes to the Foundation operating expenses?  ZERO.  Larry & Brenda Potterfield generously cover all of our operating expenses so 100% of your donation can go to the team of your choice.

Community Support=Sustainment
1/7/2014

The Lincoln Rifle & Junior Division joined the MidwayUSA Foundation in August and to say they have been successful in growing their account would be an understatement.  They were back to back winners of our Constituent Challenge, adding $30,000 alone to their Team Endowment Account, but that's just the tip of the iceberg.  They received two large donations from a generous supporter & for many that would be enough but not for this team.  The large donations and our matching incentive pushed others in the Lincoln, California community to reach into their pockets and give to the local shooting team.  Some gave $25, some gave $50, others donated $500 or more.  Donors saw the benefit in giving directly to the team of their choice and that their money would go further because of our matching incentive.

In just five short months, that support has grown their account to over $135,000.  At 5% a year, that's approximately $6,750 each year for the Lincoln Rifle Club & Junior Division to purchase ammunition, uniforms, targets, entry fees, pay for travel expenses and more.  That is sustainment and the hope for all of our teams.

Promotion Success: Walla Walla Gun Club
12/17/2013

A team in Washington just wrapped up one of our promotions.  Bob Grimm (middle) will have a Merrier Christmas this year, adding a unique Jack O'Connor Model 70 Winchester Super Grade to his gun cabinet.  But Bob isn't the only winner. The Walla Walla Gun Club will add $2,000 to their Team Endowment Account and that will be matched to give them $4,000. Register for your own promotion today!  Check out our promotions page.

Afternoon Pick ME Up
12/12/2013

At many places of business answering the phone can be a bit daunting & frustrating but that's not the case here.  This afternoon I picked up the phone and on the other end was a gentleman that represented a team in California.  He was looking for a grant application but before he could ask he became overwhelmed and caught up in thanking us.  In the most sincere voice he said, "You guys [MidwayUSA Foundation] saved our shooting team." That brief statement carried a lot of weight...simple yet strong. We aren't just helping to buy some targets or uniforms, we're supporting a passion.

I guess you could say the phone picked me up today.

Logo Use
12/9/2013

We often receive requests from teams and groups about using our logo & we gladly send it their way!  We have teams put it on their t-shirts or uniforms, other groups put it on a banner or signage at an event & we are flattered!  It is our hope that more people see our logo & learn about our mission because that, in turn, will grow YOUR Team Endowment Accounts.  So feel free to request our logo & help us help your team!

Grant Cycle in Full Swing
11/20/2013

As grant applications roll in we’re excited to see so many new teams requesting their very first grant.  In fact, over 65% of the grant applications we’ve received thus far are from new applicants.  In our last grant cycle, we handed out nearly a half a million dollars to 163 teams.  It is our hope to surpass that number this time around.

For teams that still need to apply, be sure to download the latest grant application, found all over our website…from the home page to the grants page.  In addition, when requesting your grant amount be sure to choose 5% OR a fixed amount that cannot total over 5% of your account balance.  Remember, this amount can change (hopefully increase) between the time you apply & December 15th.  Finally, please be sure to fill out EVERY PAGE of the grant application.  We know it can seem overwhelming at first glance, but it’s actually quite simple compared to many grant applications.

MidwayUSA Foundation Promotional Update
5/15/2013

As you probably know from our homepage, the iPad/HP computer fundraising promotion recently wrapped up with 250 of each system being used for fundraisers across the country. The iPad portion of the promotion went very well, however the HP portion lagged a bit in comparison. We currently have around 90 (of 250) of the Family Legacy Rifle sets remaining so please get your orders for the rifles and knives turned in ASAP to ensure you get what you need. We are putting the finishing touches on the 2014 Browning Shotgun/Knife promotion. What would you like to see in future promotions?
